Age UK

Age UK was formed in 2009 through the merger of two long-standing organisations: Age Concern England (which itself had roots dating back to 1940) and Help the Aged (founded 1961). Together, these organisations had been supporting older people in the UK for more than 60 years before combining their resources and expertise to create one of the country's most prominent charities for the elderly.

Age UK's mission is to improve the lives of older people across the UK by combating loneliness and isolation, providing practical support and advice, and campaigning for better health and care services. The charity runs a national advice line, befriending services, home visiting programmes, and partnerships with local Age UK organisations that deliver tailored support in communities across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

The Age UK charity retail network spans more than 400 shops across the country. Because Age UK operates as a federation of local charities, many shops are run by local Age UK organisations rather than the national charity directly — which means the proceeds stay within the local community, supporting older people in the immediate area. This federated model gives Age UK shops a strong local identity and community connection.

Age UK shops stock a wide range of donated goods including clothing, books, homeware, and gifts. Many branches also sell Age UK-branded health and wellbeing products, greeting cards, and gift wrap. The shops are welcoming, well-organised spaces, and many employ older volunteers who bring warmth and experience to the shop floor — embodying the charity's belief that older people have enormous value to contribute to society.
