YMCA England & Wales
Over 100 shops supporting young people and communities across England and Wales
The YMCA was founded in London on 6 June 1844 by George Williams, a draper from Somerset who was alarmed by the moral dangers facing young men who had moved to the city to work in trade and industry. Williams and a group of fellow drapers began holding prayer meetings and Bible studies in his employer's premises at 72 St Paul's Churchyard, and from this small beginning grew a movement that would eventually span the globe.
Within decades of its founding, the YMCA had spread across Britain, Europe, North America, and beyond, becoming one of the world's largest voluntary organisations. The London YMCA opened its first purpose-built premises in 1855, and by the turn of the twentieth century, YMCAs were providing accommodation, education, sports, and social programmes to young men in cities and towns around the world. The organisation later expanded its membership to include women and girls.
In England and Wales, the YMCA operates as a federation of around 80 local YMCAs, collectively providing supported housing for homeless young people, childcare, youth work, community programmes, sports and leisure facilities, and community cafes. YMCA England and Wales is the national coordinating body for this network. Together, the local YMCAs run over 100 charity shops, with proceeds supporting their services in those local communities.
YMCA charity shops stock donated clothing, books, homeware, toys, and accessories, and are well-regarded for their friendly, community-focused approach. Because YMCA shops are run by local YMCAs rather than a central retail operation, the income stays in the community — directly funding housing support, youth work, and wellbeing services for young people who are most in need.
YMCA relies on volunteers to run its shops. One regular session a week is typically all that's needed.

YMCA — common questions
When and where was the YMCA founded?
The YMCA was founded on 6 June 1844 in London by George Williams, a young draper who was concerned about the welfare of young men moving to cities for work. Williams and a group of fellow drapers began meeting for prayer and Bible study, and from this grew a global movement. Within decades the YMCA had spread to dozens of countries.
What does YMCA stand for?
YMCA stands for Young Men's Christian Association. The name reflects the organisation's origins in 1844, when it was founded for young men working in London's trade and industry. Today, YMCA programmes and services are open to people of all genders, ages, and backgrounds, and the organisation rarely uses the full name in day-to-day communications.
What can I donate to a YMCA charity shop?
YMCA shops accept good-quality clothing, shoes, accessories, books, CDs, DVDs, homeware, jewellery, and toys. Items should be clean and in good condition. As YMCA shops are run by local YMCAs, what is accepted may vary slightly. Contact your nearest YMCA shop to confirm before dropping off a large donation.
Do YMCA shops support local or national causes?
YMCA shops are run by local YMCA organisations, not a central body. This means the money raised in each shop stays within that local YMCA and supports housing, youth work, childcare, and community programmes in that specific area. Shopping at your local YMCA shop is a direct investment in young people and families in your community.
How do I find my nearest YMCA charity shop?
Use the postcode or location search on this page to find YMCA charity shops near you using live map data. You can also visit ymca.org.uk and navigate to your local YMCA to find their shop locations.
What services does YMCA provide for young people?
Local YMCAs provide a wide range of services depending on their location, including supported housing and hostels for young homeless people, childcare and nurseries, youth clubs and mentoring, community centres, sports and leisure facilities, and employability programmes. YMCA England and Wales estimates its member organisations support around 500,000 people every year.
